What is naloxone?
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIH), naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose by attaching to opioid receptors, reversing and blocking the effects of other opioids. It also quickly restores normal breathing if a person's breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose.
NARCAN® Nasal Spray was first approved by the FDA in 2015 as a prescription drug. It was developed to be used at home without the need for any medical training and comes in a concentrated 4 mg dose (2 per carton) of naloxone, which is administered via nasal spray to a person who is having an opioid overdose emergency. This lifesaving medication is to be given right away, but it does not take the place of emergency medical care. It's important to contact 911 services immediately after giving the first dose - even if the person wakes up.
NARCAN® Naloxone HCl Nasal Spray 4 mg is now available on store shelves nationwide and online. Including NARCAN® Nasal Spray in a first-aid kit, or carrying it on the go in case of an opioid emergency, can make a difference and help reverse the effects of opioids while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.
Approximately every 8 minutes, on average, a person dies from an opioid overdose.
